**** HRM Media Release

Halifax Regional Municipality declares local state of emergency

Effective 11 p.m. tonight, Mayor Mike Savage and Regional Council have declared a local state of emergency in the communities affected by the fires. The local state of emergency will be in effect for seven days, unless otherwise lifted or extended.

Emergency responders are working around the clock to keep people safe and reduce the threats posed by the fires in the Tantallon and Hammonds Plains areas. Residents are urged to follow the directives of emergency responders.

Under the Emergency Management Act, declaring a state of local emergency is a legal mechanism that provides the municipal government with a higher level of intergovernmental coordination, access to emergency discretionary funds, the ability to mobilize additional supports, organizations and businesses to support evacuated residents.

The municipality will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves. The most up-to-date information is available at halifax.ca/fire and @hfxgov on Twitter.

Take note

Premier Houston said that effective as of 4 pm on Tuesday, all activities ( hiking, camping, fishing, ATV use) is prohibited. The ban includes forestry and mining industries and other commercial activities on government land.

In addition to the Province of Nova Scotia restricting travel and activities in wooded areas, the municipality is closing all wooded areas of municipal parks and all municipal trails effective 8 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31. Parks such as Shubie Park, Point Pleasant Park and Admiral Cove Park will be fully closed, as they are heavily wooded. However, non-wooded areas of municipal parks, such as greenspaces, playgrounds, sports fields and ball diamonds will remain open for use. Examples of non-wooded parks are the Halifax Common and Sullivan’s Pond.

For parks which have both wooded and non-wooded areas, the wooded areas are closed and the non-wooded areas remain open. An example of this would be Fort Needham Memorial Park where the monument, playground and sports field remain open but the wooded section is closed.

Parking lot closures will be completed as soon as possible, however with many wooded parks across the region this will take time to complete.

No expected time for residents to return. Crews are working hard to get residents back

Farmers Dairy fire significantly improved.

First responders need to move fast and safely is part of the reason public are being kept out. Poor conditions helping fire spread creates need for fast response and equipment transfer.

DNR leads investigation into cause.

Slow consistent rain needed over heavy downpour so water soaks into the ground vs heavy downpour which will cause run off instead of soaking in

(Fire) DNR air support has been an important resource at wildfires on Tantallon and Shelburne area.

Pilots Daryl Ressler and Ian Moore (posed by helicopter in photo) are two of the pilots at Tantallon today. They say they are flying about the distance of here to Bangor a day.

Air support provides information to crews both air and ground, finding flare ups which may be difficult to see from the ground and dumping water quickly ahead of ground crews sometimes in areas different to access by any other means.

The buckets hold about 200 gallons of water and can be filled in just about any reasonable body of water

We spoke to Hope from Hope for Wildlife about their involvement in helping through the wildfires in Nova Scotia. Here’s a few points from our chat.

Hope has had an increase in calls requesting help for wildlife.

This is an especially hard time of year with many animals now having young, many immobile such as bird hatchlings and porcupines.

Motorists should be extra vigilantes in areas around affected fire zones as many animals are fleeing the fires

Be aware that wandering wildlife may increase in areas outside of the affected fire zones as exhausted wildlife will be looking for food, water and shelter. Avoid pet interaction with these stressed animals.

Two fawns were rescued by police in the Shelburne area and have been introduced to a herd at Hope. Hope herself has been feeding the newborns and say they are doing well.

Donations help. A lot of resources go into rescuing wildlife. Cash and food such as eggs and green vegetables are most welcome.
