Pictou County District RCMP charge three people with firearms offences
Pictou County District RCMP has charged three people with firearms offences after a report of shots fired in River John.
On January 25, 2023, at approximately 9:20 a.m., Pictou County District RCMP responded to a report of shots having been fired near a home on Sergeant Ln. in River John. RCMP officers secured the area around the home while RCMP Police Dog Services and the Nova Scotia RCMP Emergency Response Team attended to provide assistance.
At approximately 1:55 p.m., after a short negotiation, the occupants of the home surrendered peacefully and were safely arrested. In total, five people were arrested as part of this investigation and all were held in custody while a search warrant was executed at the home. During the search, RCMP officers located and seized unsafely stored firearms including a rifle, shotgun. Also seized were restricted capacity magazines, ammunition and firearms accessories. A round of military ordnance was also located and safely removed with assistance from the Royal Canadian Navy’s Fleet Diving Unit Atlantic (RCN FDU(A)).
Three people, a 41-year-old New Glasgow man, a 43-year-old River John man and a 30-year-old River John woman, were released on conditions. They will be facing charges including Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, Careless Use of a Firearm and Unsafe Storage of a Firearm. All three will appear in Pictou Provincial Court on April 17, 2023, at 9:30 a.m.
The other two people that were arrested were released without charge.
