National Fire Prevention Week
National Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct. 6 to 12. This year’s theme is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You”.
Working smoke alarms save lives by providing early detection and warning in the event of a fire, giving you and your family valuable time to escape safely.
Below are some important smoke alarm safety tips for residents:
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (e.g. hallway) and on each level (including the basement) of your home.
- Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
- Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or stop responding when tested.
Residents are encouraged to ensure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, especially those with sensory or physical disabilities.
Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency is running a contest from Oct. 6 to 12 to promote National Fire Prevention Week and smoke alarm safety. Visit our website to learn more about how you can participate and win prizes.
