**** Cape Breton Police Release

A message from Chief Walsh:

Over the last 10 days, we have experienced an unprecedented number of serious and high-risk incidents involving weapons in our community, and I want to acknowledge the exceptional response from the members and staff of your Cape Breton Regional Police Service.

These are each isolated cases with no evidence to suggest any larger concern for public safety; but, any time weapons are used in public spaces, it presents potential risk to others, including our officers. While we are trained to expect and manage the inherent risk that comes with the job, these kind of dangerous events, including when shots are fired in our direction, are uncommon and upsetting experiences. I am incredibly grateful that none of our officers were injured and that we were able to limit any further impacts to the safety of the citizens in our community.

It is situations like these that demonstrate the value of having a full-service police agency with the skills, training, expertise and resources – things like an Emergency Response Team, Carbine Operators, K9, a Drone and so many other specialized tools – to respond immediately to any kind of threat. This includes CBRM dispatch operators, whose real-time support is critical to our successful response, and the many members behind the scenes of the front-line – including Investigative sections, Forensics and clerical staff – that directly contribute to the collaborative team effort to protect public safety.

I am so very proud of the continued diligence, dedication and professionalism the CBRPS provides to serve and protect our community – with you, and for you.
