RCMP North East Traffic Services-Cape Breton apprehended and charged an Ontario man that fled from a traffic checkpoint in North Sydney.
On December 2, RCMP North East Traffic Services-Cape Breton was conducting a traffic checkpoint in North Sydney. At approximately 8:15 p.m., the driver of a Dodge Caravan that entered the checkpoint exhibited signs of impairment and provided a roadside breath sample which resulted in a “warn”.
RCMP officers were in process of issuing the driver, a 67-year-old Ontario man, a 7-day roadside driving suspension, along with multiple summary offence tickets, when the man used a spare key to start the engine and flee from officers at a high rate of speed. RCMP officers did not pursue the vehicle.
Later that evening, with the assistance of the Cape Breton Regional Police Service, police located the vehicle on a dead end street in North Sydney. Spike belts were successfully deployed to immobilize the vehicle.
The man, who appeared agitated, exited the vehicle, did not comply with the officer’s commands and returned inside the vehicle. Officers approached and, in an attempt to arrest the man, a conducted energy weapon was deployed, but was not successful. Multiple officers quickly removed the man, who was resisting arrest, from the driver’s seat and arrested him.
John G. Jones, 67, has been charged with:
• Resisting Arrest (two counts);
• Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance (two counts);
• Flight from Peace Officer;
Jones was also issued a 7-day Order of Suspension and the Summary Offence Tickets for the following offences:
• Driving Motor Vehicle Without Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance;
• Driving a Motor Vehicle While License Suspended;
• Displaying a Number Plate Issued for Another Vehicle;
• Operating a Motor Vehicle While Not Wearing an Available Seat Belt;
• Illegally Possessing Liquor,
Jones was remanded into custody and will appear in Sydney Provincial court on December 21, at 9:30 a.m.
