Storm impacts on municipal services – March 2

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following updates and impacts to municipal services as a result of the anticipated weather event.

Municipal offices
We will be delaying the opening of our offices tomorrow, Friday, March 3, until 10 a.m. We will monitor the weather event and if there is a change in status, an update will be provided. Employees who are able to work from home are being asked to do so.

Safety is the municipality’s top priority. Delaying opening will facilitate clearing efforts by crews and ensure a safer commute for our employees and residents.

Overnight winter parking ban
The overnight winter parking ban will be enforced from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. on March 3 (in both Zone 1 – Central and Zone 2 – Non-Central), to allow crews to properly clear streets and sidewalks. For more information, visit our website.

Halifax Transit
Halifax Transit will be ending service early tonight, March 2, with no new trips starting after 10 p.m. Halifax Transit will have a delayed start tomorrow morning, March 3, with service resumption ramping up at 10 a.m.For the most up-to-date information on service disruptions, residents can visit halifax.ca/transitalert or follow @hfxtransitalert on Twitter.

Parks & Recreation

Most municipal recreation facilities were closed as of 4 p.m. today. A decision will be made by 8 a.m. tomorrow (with potential reopening at 10 a.m.) as to whether rentals, facilities and programming activities will continue as scheduled. Please call your local recreation centre for further information. The Public Gardens will be closed the morning of March 3.

Support for those experiencing homelessness
The Province of Nova Scotia funds the operation of three emergency shelters in the Halifax region which are run by various service providers:

  • Halifax (2029 North Park Street)
  • Dartmouth (61 Dundas Street, Christ Church Parish Hall)
  • Lower Sackville (125 Metropolitan Avenue, the former St. Elizabeth Seton Church)

The province is currently working with their service providers to add space and provide transportation, where needed. Street Navigators and Halifax Ground Search & Rescue are conducting wellness checks March 2-3 and are working closely with people experiencing homelessness to ensure they know what supports are available.
