Mild weather continues in Eastern Canada
Since mid-December, the eastern half of the country has been experiencing quasi-continuous above-normal temperatures, and we expect it will continue for at least another week.
Temperature anomaly (difference from normal) in Canada from December 15 to January 8.
These temperatures bring many consequences:
- the amounts of snow received at the expense of rain are below normal (except in southeastern Ontario and the Laurentians north of Montréal);
- the snow cover on the ground is lower than normal;
- and lake ice is also thinner than normal.
These warmer-than-normal temperatures have impacts on winter activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and there are high risks for anyone venturing onto frozen water bodies.
In terms of snow, the situation could improve or get drastically worse on Friday, January 13 (this is not a joke!), depending on the trajectory of a weather system we are currently tracking. Keep a close eye on our forecasts and warnings over the next few days.
