Winter Solstice!

The winter solstice – or the start of astronomical winter – is upon us today (Wednesday.) The time and date of the start of astronomical winter are based on the exact position of the Earth in relation to the Sun.

As Earth’s North Pole tilts away from the Sun on the solstice, it marks the start of the cold season here in the northern hemisphere and, with the South Pole tilting towards the sun, it signals the first day of summer in the southern hemisphere.

The meteorological winter, however, is based on the 12-month calendar, and on the annual average temperature cycle. It started three weeks ago on December 1st, and will last until February 28.

What kind of winter can we expect this year? In case you missed it, here is the temperature outlook for the upcoming months.
