Remembrance Day services modified due to COVID-19 restrictions
As is the case with many public events during the pandemic, Remembrance Day services around the province will again be modified somewhat this year.
Veterans Affairs Canada contracts Nova Scotia Health to provide care at seven veterans’ long-term care facilities in the province. They include:
- Taigh Na Mara (Glace Bay, Eastern Zone)
- Harbourview Hospital – (Sydney Mines, Eastern Zone)
- Northumberland Veterans Unit at Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital (Pictou, Northern Zone)
- Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building (Halifax, Central Zone)
- Veteran’s Place (Yarmouth, Western Zone)
- Soldiers Memorial Hospital, (Middleton, Western Zone)
- Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital (Lunenburg, Western Zone)
Normally, many of these facilities would hold public ceremonies on Thursday, Nov. 11.
This year, citizens should expect there won’t be a public gathering at their veterans’ facility, unless an invitation has been received.
Each long-term care facility will customize its own private events in a way that balances the significant recognition deserving of our veterans, while ensuring many of our most vulnerable citizens remain safe.
While in-house services will take on a new form, the meaning and intentions of each ceremony will remain the same – remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for a better world.
