RCMP Collision with All Terrain Vehicle Leads to Investigation
—————————————————————
The province’s independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has begun an investigation into a collision between an RCMP vehicle and an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle).
During the early morning hours of June 6, members of the RCMP attempted to arrest an escapee from the Northeast Nova Correctional Facility. The Affected Party (AP) was fleeing from the police on a stolen ATV in the area of Sheet Harbour. During attempts to stop and arrest the AP, a collision between a police vehicle and the ATV occurred and the AP sustained a broken wrist.
As a result of the injury the RCMP contacted SiRT who is now investigating the matter.
The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
