Just hours after our public safety post, another fire

At 11:20 a.m. today, #hfxfirefighters responded again to St. Patrick’s-Alexandra School — the second time this week.

Our members arrived to find two separate fires burning on the third floor. The first-in truck from Station 3 (West Street) acted quickly, extinguishing both before they could spread.

This underscores what we’ve already said: abandoned buildings like this are a serious threat to public and fire fighter safety. These risks are not theoretical — they’re happening.

Used needles litter the grounds. Further, there’s evidence of fire setting, unobstructed entry points, and signs of occupancy. Several rooms — including the library and gymnasium — contain dangerously high fire loads, with dry wood floors, stage materials, and shelving.

On Wednesday of this week, our members responded to a report of heavy smoke coming from the building.

Arriving #firefighters encountered a fire on the second floor. A second alarm was initially requested but later cancelled as the fire was quickly brought under control. Thankfully, no one was injured.

Abandoned buildings like this one are high-hazard sites. The risks to our members and the public are well known — and rising.

Public safety and fire fighter safety are our top priority.
