HEART Society would like to share the following statement on behalf of Ebraheim and Kawthar:
“We would like to offer our deepest gratitude to the thousands of Nova Scotians who have shown us their love and support over this past year. The loss is immense, and we miss our children every day. Still we have found comfort in the kindness of strangers, in the courage of first responders, in the dedication of healthcare professionals, and in the sense of belonging offered to us by this community. We will keep each and every one of you in our hearts forever.”
Our lives have great joy and love, and our lives also have great tragedy and loss. In the past year, the only thing that rose to the same level as the tragic loss of the 7 seven children we loved, was the outpouring of compassion and support from communities, both near and far.
Today, one year after the tragic fire, we continue to mourn the loss of seven beautiful Barho children. With each passing day we have thought about Ahmad, 14; Rola, 12; Mohamad, 9; Ola, 8; Hala, 3; Rana, 2 and three-month-old Abdullah. They are no longer with us, but in difficult times our memories bring comfort.
We would like to express our most heartfelt thanks to the many people and organizations who have offered their love and guidance over the last year as we supported Kawthar and Ebraheim, the children’s parents. From the first responders that night, to the hospital staff, to ISANS, to members of the various mosques, to the thousands of Canadians who were there for us during this devastating time, we are deeply grateful.
We established the Hants East Assisting Refugees Team because we wanted to help those who were suffering, to bring the compassion of our community to bear on those in need. In turn, you have shown us that same love, and we will never forget it.
