Municipal service level adjustments for Remembrance Day 

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following municipal program and service level adjustments for Remembrance Day on Nov. 11, 2024. 

Solid Waste 
There will be no garbage, organics or recyclables collection services on Monday, Nov. 11. Curbside collection regularly scheduled for Monday, Nov. 11 will instead occur on Saturday, Nov. 9. Residents are asked to place materials curbside prior to 7 a.m. on collection day to guarantee pickup, ensuring items are contained and secured from wildlife. 

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11. It will be open on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.  
 
The Materials Recovery Facility will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11. It will be open on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.  

The Household Special Waste Depot in Bayers Lake will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 9. It will be open on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services 
In recognition of those who serve our country, Halifax Transit is offering free transit to all veterans and military personnel, and their accompanying family members, on Remembrance Day. On Monday, Nov. 11, veterans and military personnel wishing to use the free transit service are asked to be in uniform or display their military identification upon boarding. This offer extends to Halifax Transit bus and ferry services, as well as registered Access-A-Bus users.  

Residents are also advised that buses will pull over at 11 a.m. to pause for three minutes of silence, to honour and remember those who served and continue to serve. 

Halifax Transit buses and Alderney Ferry will be operating on holiday schedules on Monday, Nov. 11. Woodside Ferry service does not operate on holidays. For detailed holiday schedules by individual route, visit our website 

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services  

Most municipally operated recreation facilities will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11. Residents are advised to call ahead to their respective facility for operating hours and program information. Contact information for municipally operated facilities is online. 

Parking 
On-street paid parking will be free on Monday, Nov. 11. Motorists are reminded to abide by other posted signage, including no stopping, accessible parking spaces and no parking zones. 

Customer Contact Centres 

The 311 Contact Centre will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11 for full service; however urgent calls can still be reported. Regular operating hours will resume on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Residents can reach 311 by phone, or by emailing contactus@311.halifax.ca 

In-person Customer Service Centres will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11. Customer Service Centres will reopen with regular hours on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Remembrance Day ceremonies 
Remembrance Day ceremonies are organized by the Royal Canadian Legion. Residents may contact their local Legion or visit their website to learn more.  

Residents are encouraged to take a moment on Remembrance Day to remember those who have served and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict, and peace.
