Derelict Structures Continue to Pose Major Safety Risk in Halifax
Halifax Professional Fire Fighters are once again urging caution and vigilance around derelict buildings in our city following multiple fire responses in recent days.
On Wednesday of last week, fire fighters responded to a working fire on the second floor of the vacant St. Patrick’s-Alexandra School — a known hazard that crews have attended numerous times. Less than 96 hours later, fire crews returned to the same site to extinguish two additional fires found on the third floor.
These incidents come just weeks after the significant fire at the Bloomfield property on AgricolaStreet, which required a large-scale response and underscored the growing risks associatedwith vacant and unsecured buildings.
Our members are trained and ready to respond, but each of these calls introduces serious risks — not only to fire fighters, but to members of the public who may be inside or near these properties. Derelict buildings are not just urban decay — they are high-hazard zones. The frequency and severity of recent incidents speak for themselves.
We will continue to advocate for the safety of our members and the communities we serve. It’simportant the public understands the very real risks posed by these structures.
