LungNSPEI Launches COPD Awareness Campaign on World COPD Day

In recognition of World COPD Day, LungNSPEI is proud to announce the launch of a comprehensive COPD Awareness Campaign aimed at raising awareness of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), its signs and symptoms, and the importance of early diagnosis through spirometry testing. This campaign aims to foster empathy for those affected by COPD, a chronic condition that impacts thousands of Atlantic Canadians, while providing hope through education on its treatable nature.

The COPD Awareness Campaign is a joint effort supported by the Atlantic COPD Care Network, chaired by LungNSPEI. This initiative emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and understanding of COPD, which remains the second leading cause of hospitalization in Canada. By increasing awareness of the signs and symptoms of COPD, the campaign hopes to encourage more individuals to seek testing and support for managing this chronic lung disease, ultimately improving quality of life for patients and their families.

“Our goal is to support individuals living with COPD and to break down the stigma that surrounds this condition, which often leaves people feeling isolated and misunderstood,” said Robert MacDonald, President & CEO of LungNSPEI. “COPD is a treatable disease, and with the right diagnosis, care, and support, those affected can lead meaningful lives. We want Atlantic Canadians to know there is help, there is hope.”

The campaign will also address the stigma that individuals with COPD often experience, promoting messages of compassion and understanding to build empathy across communities. “COPD is treatable. There is help, there is hope” is a central message of the campaign, which seeks to create a supportive environment for those diagnosed with COPD and reduce the stigma associated with lung disease.

With the highest rates of COPD in the country, the Atlantic region faces unique challenges in addressing this chronic disease. LungNSPEI’s campaign aims to create a unified approach in tackling COPD, enhancing the lives of patients, and advancing public awareness of this pressing health issue.

In addition to the campaign, LungNSPEI will offer digital resources and marketing materials to build public understanding of COPD and support those affected by it. The organization encourages anyone with early symptoms of COPD—such as chronic cough, shortness of breath, and frequent respiratory infections—to speak to their doctor about spirometry testing.
