The last wave of recent HAZMAT training came back to Burnside as a new challenge unfolded in windy and wet conditions.

Upon arrival, command crews met with staff.  Fire responded due to a call regarding a spill or leak of a chemical during a train car filling.

It was unknown if the spill was coming from the top of the car or anywhere along the hoses or pumps.  It was also unknown what the chemical was.

Firefighters were dressed in HAZMAT gear and a decontamination area was set up with factors such as the wind and rain in mind.  Police were called to assist in evacuation efforts and EHS were on standby.

Crews investigated the rail car and were able to safely investigate the cause of the chemical spill, cap it properly, and make safe the area.

Returning back to command, the decon crews tended to the investigators, making exposed suits and gear safer before packaging the gear up for transport.
