Clearing Storm Drains, Catchbasins and Hydrants

Halifax Water is advising residents that the combination of forecasted rain, milder temperatures and a significant snow cover will create surface-level run-off. This increases the risk of localized flooding, especially if storm drains and catch basins are blocked with ice and snow.

To help avoid this, Halifax Water is encouraging residents to check their storm drains/catch basins to ensure they are clear. If you see they are blocked by snow, we ask that customers clear them if they are able, and it is safe to do so.

Customers with driveway culverts should ensure that snow is not blocking the flow of water.

Halifax Water crews are working hard to clear snow from over 8,400 hydrants. As this work continues, there may be an impact on traffic lanesWe apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience as this necessary work is carried out.

We welcome and encourage customers to remove snow from hydrants if they are able and it is safe to do so.
