New Glasgow Regional Police charge a young person with 18 counts of mischief, New Glasgow

New Glasgow Regional Police have charged a young person after graffiti was found throughout the Town of New Glasgow.

On Tuesday January 2, 2024, New Glasgow Regional Police responded to the downtown area of New Glasgow where officers discovered buildings and structures that have been spray painted with black spray paint.

New Glasgow Regional Police investigation led to the identification of one young person from Pictou County.

New Glasgow Regional Police Major Crime Unit and the Street Crime Enforcement Unit conducted a Search Warrant on January 11 at a residence in Pictou County where paint and paint supplies were seized.

The young person has been charged with 17 counts of mischief under $5000.00 and one charge of mischief over $5000.00 and will be appearing in Provincial Court in Pictou on January 15, 2024 and was later released on a judicial recognizance.

Graffiti is not the same as public art because it is painted on public or private property without the consent of the owner. While it may sound like an insignificant crime, graffiti has proved to cost property owners thousands of dollars in damages and has made the area to feel unsafe.

New Glasgow Regional Police advises that if you witness vandalism in progress call 911 to report it. Also, if you notice graffiti that already exists you should call 902 752-1941 to report it.
