Police lay charges in vehicle crash
Halifax Regional Police have charged a youth in relation to a pursuit and vehicle crash that occurred in Halifax yesterday.
At approximately 4:45 p.m. officers received a report of a vehicle that had been stolen on Barrington Street in Halifax earlier in the day. A short time later the vehicle was observed in Sackville by Halifax District RCMP officers. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver refused to stop and fled the area. Given the unsafe driving of the suspect, officers did not pursue the vehicle but continued to track the vehicle and attempted to get the driver to stop again near the MacKay Bridge in Halifax.
Police received a number of calls from the public in relation to the unsafe driving. As the driver continued to unnecessarily put the public at risk, a tire deflation device was used to slow the vehicle’s speed near the 100 block of Herring Cove Road. The driver continued on for a short distance until the vehicle struck a bus shelter and then a power pole near Shoreham Lane. The two passengers fled the vehicle on foot. The driver was arrested at the scene.
A 14-year-old youth is scheduled to appear in provincial youth court today to face charges of:
- Mischief (x2)
- Mischief over $5000
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
- Motor vehicle theft
- Flight from peace officer
- Dangerous operation of a conveyance
- Breach of probation
