Chances of a white Christmas

It’s that time of the year again when many are excitedly counting down the days until Christmas. On the morning of December 25, will the ground be white? Will the landscape be filled with a festive wintery scenery?

While some regions in Canada are already adorned with a blanket of snow, others still showcase the earthy hues of a brown landscape leftover from the fall season. Therefore, the big question is, what are the chances of waking up to a wintery scenery on December 25?

As curious as you are, we’ve dug into our snowfall records from 1955 to 2021 and calculated the probability of some major Canadian cities having a white Christmas this year.

How do we define white Christmas

Did you know that there are strict parameters that define a white Christmas and a perfect Christmas?

  • White Christmas: There must be at least 2 cm of snow on the ground on Christmas morning by 7 a.m.
  • Perfect Christmas: There must be at least 2 cm of snow on the ground on Christmas morning by 7 a.m., as well as a measurable snowfall sometime on Christmas Day.
