We reached out to Halifax Water about what to do if you find a missing manhole cover during a storm. Here’s what they said.

“To protect the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, all displaced manhole covers should be reported to Halifax Water immediately. Our staff will respond as quickly as possible to safely put it back where it belongs with the appropriate safety precautions in place.

These covers typically weigh approximately 36+ KG (80+ LBS), and Halifax Water does not condone individuals attempting to reinsert displaced manhole covers. These are predominately in roadways, and the safety risk is too high.
