Multi-agency response leads to successfully finding a missing person
A multi-agency response led to successfully locating a missing Malagash man.
On April 19, 2023, at approximately 8:10 p.m., Cumberland County District RCMP responded to a report of a missing 79-year-old Malagash man from a home on Malagash Rd. RCMP officers learned that the man had gone out to walk his dog around 5 p.m. and had not been heard from since. An RCMP Police Dog Service team were immediately dispatched to the scene to provide assistance.
RCMP officers contacted a Ground Search and Rescue incident commander to begin the process of mobilizing GSAR resources to the area.
EHS were also dispatched to the scene and one of the paramedics advised that the Wallace District Volunteer Fire Department had a drone that may be able to assist with the search.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., RCMP officers asked that the Wallace District Volunteer Fire Department be contacted so that they could attend with their drone.
RCMP officers, paramedics, firefighters, members of the community and family all worked together in searching for the man and his dog.
At approximately 10:45 p.m., the man and his dog were located with the use of the drone and they were safely escorted out of the woods. The man was displaying signs of exposure and was turned over to paramedics for treatment.
The family of the man advised our officers that they were impressed, not only by the quick response but, also the level of response that each agency brought to the table. The family thanked all first responders for their work that resulted in finding their loved one safely.
The ability of numerous agencies, including the RCMP, EHS, the Wallace District Volunteer Fire Department, Ground Search and Rescue and the public, to work together in a coordinated fashion directly lead to the safe conclusion of this incident. We thank all those who were involved.
