Hurricanes Fiona and Ian retired

Late March, the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) Hurricane Committee retired Fiona and Ian from the rotating lists of Atlantic tropical cyclone names because of the death and destruction they caused in Central America, the Caribbean, the United States, and Canada.

Hurricane Fiona

Fiona struck the Atlantic provinces as a strong post-tropical cyclone in September 2022, bringing loss of life and significant damage along its path. Falling trees knocked out power at more than 600 000 homes and businesses, with some enduring outages for more than two weeks. Fiona is the costliest weather event on record in Atlantic Canada.

Overall, the storm produced over 3 billion USD in damage across the Caribbean and Canada and was responsible for 29 fatalities.

Hurricane Ian

Ian was a large and powerful category 4 hurricane that struck western Cuba and southwestern Florida. It is responsible for more than 150 deaths and over 112 billion USD in damage in the United States, making it the third-costliest hurricane in the country’s history.

New names to replace Fiona and Ian

Six Atlantic tropical cyclone names lists are used in rotation and recycled every six years. The only time there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name for a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity.

Farrah will replace Fiona in the list of names, and Idris will replace Ian. These new names will make their first appearance during the 2028 Atlantic hurricane season.

Here is the list of names for the upcoming Atlantic tropical storms seasons:
