New Local Food Program Accepting Applications
—————————————————-
Nova Scotia farmers can now apply for funding to help them grow their businesses – and more food for Nova Scotians.

The Local Food Advancer Program helps large-scale farms invest in new technology and equipment so they can add new crops, develop new products and reach new customers. To qualify for funding, producers must clearly demonstrate how their expansion will make more healthy, local food available to Nova Scotians.

“The food produced in Nova Scotia is second to none, and we want to see more of it on kitchen tables across the province,” said Agriculture Minister Greg Morrow. “Not only does this program help the government reach its buy-local goals, it also helps build stronger, more sustainable farms in rural Nova Scotia.”

Funding through the Local Food Advancer Program covers up to 40 per cent of a project’s eligible costs, to a maximum of $400,000.

The $1.5-million fund is part of the government’s $7.9-million investment, announced in December, to help local farmers grow more value-added local food.

The application deadline is February 28.

Quick Facts:
— applicants must be at least 19 years of age and own a registered, active farm generating more than $1 million in sales annually
