Warm spell in Eastern Canada

Temperatures in the New Year have been anything but seasonal for Eastern Canada.

Since December 28, temperatures in southeastern Ontario and southern Quebec have been well above normal for this time of the year. This current warm spell is expected to last until January 7 and then resume on January 9 for a few more days.

Temperature anomaly across Canada from December 28, 2022 to January 4, 2023.

In some areas, the temperature anomalies (difference from the normal), have exceeded +20 degrees! On December 30, temperature anomalies reached +23 degrees in Quebec and +20 degrees in Ontario. On December 31, New Brunswick had a temperature anomaly of +16 degrees.

In southern Quebec, a wave of mild weather of this intensity and duration between mid-December and mid-January is particularly rare. For example, in Montreal, it has occurred on average every 25 years since 1875 (in 2015, 2008, 2007, 1957 and 1895).
