Municipal service level adjustments for Labour Day weekend 2022
The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following municipal program and service level adjustments over the upcoming Labour Day long weekend.
Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours
No municipal solid waste collection service will take place on Monday, Sept. 5.
Curbside collection of garbage, organics or recyclables normally scheduled for Monday, Sept. 5 will occur on the preceding Saturday, Sept. 3. Residents are reminded that collection service can begin as early as 7 a.m.; to ensure pick up, residents may place materials curbside the evening prior to collection day.
The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax recycling facility and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5, but will be open for regular service on Saturday, Sept. 3 and Tuesday, Sept. 6.
The Household Special Waste Depot at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 3, but will be open for regular service on Saturday, Sept. 10. Additionally, a mobile Household Special Waste event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Cole Harbour Place. For the complete Household Special Waste program schedule, click here.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services
Halifax Transit buses will be operating on holiday service on Monday, Sept. 5.
The Alderney Ferry service will run at half-hour frequency on Monday, Sept. 5 – the first crossing will depart the Alderney terminal at 7:30 a.m. and the final crossing will depart the Halifax terminal at 11:45 p.m. There will be no Woodside ferry service on Monday, Sept. 5.

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services
The Emera Oval will be open on Monday, Sept. 5. A detailed schedule can be found here. Equipment lending will be open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting.
Many other municipally-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5. Residents are advised to call ahead to their respective facility for operating hours and program information. Contact information for municipally-operated facilities is online.
As of Tuesday, Aug. 30 – all municipal beaches are closed to supervised swimming for the year, except for Kearney Lake Beach, Chocolate Lake Beach and Penhorn Lake Beach. These sites will re-open for supervised swimming on Saturday, Sept. 3, Sunday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 5 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
Know your swimming limitations if you choose to swim in unsupervised bodies of water. Always swim with a buddy in supervised areas and adults should never leave children unsupervised in the water.
Work on the Centennial Pool is ongoing, and the pool is expected to reopen in October.
Residents are reminded they may continue to use REC at Home which offers a variety of activities that you can enjoy with your family – from arts and crafts, to at-home workouts.
Parking
On-street parking meters will be free on Monday, Sept. 5. Motorists are reminded to abide by other posted signage, including no-parking zones.
Customer Contact Centres
The 311 Contact Centre will be operating on regular hours on Monday, Sept. 5 (from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.).
Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5, and will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Alderney Gate and Musquodoboit Harbour Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5, and will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Please note: Bayers Road Customer Service Centre is closed from Sept. 1 to Sept. 16.
