Active transportation devices now permitted on Halifax Transit buses and ferries
The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following policy adjustments concerning the use of active transportation devices on Halifax Transit conventional buses and ferries.
E-bikes can now be transported on bike racks located at the front of Halifax Transit conventional buses. E-bikes are already permitted to be transported on Halifax Transit ferries if they are secured in the provided bike racks. Users must follow the size and weight capacity limits, which can be found online.
Skateboards, foldable manual scooters, and other manual transportation devices can now be transported on Halifax Transit conventional buses if they are folded and stored on a passenger’s lap.
Fat tire conventional bikes and ebikes can now be transported using new bike racks on Halifax Transit ferries. Users must follow the size and weight capacity limits, which can be found online.
At this time, gas-powered bikes and motorized transportation devices, such as segways, e-scooters, and hoverboards, are not permitted on Halifax Transit conventional buses or ferries; however, a storage solution to safely store and transport escooters on ferries is currently underway. More information will be available in the coming weeks.
These changes demonstrate a commitment to user feedback, support integrated mobility and active transportation use, and align with the municipality’s commitments to climate action.
Residents are also reminded that Halifax Transit is offering free transit service for the months of July and August, as part of the municipality’s Free Fares Fridays & Free Sail Saturdays program.
