Thursday evening MARS received a report of a dead, floating whale in the outer approaches of Halifax Harbour.

We were very fortunate to get on the water Friday morning with the help of the mariner who first reported it to get an initial look at the animal and collect some samples. It turned out to be a small, male humpback whale.

Throughout the day we worked closely with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and other partners to try to secure a location to bring the animal ashore for a necropsy. Unfortunately this couldn’t be arranged before the tide dropped and the animal had drifted off.

At the moment, we do not know why this animal died. As such, we’re still hopeful to relocate this animal in order to conduct a necropsy.

The animal was last spotted near Lawlor Island and we’re asking anyone who may be on the water or near the islands in the harbour to please report any sightings to the MARS hotline:
1-866-567-6277.

Thanks to Rob, DFO and the many others involved for thier efforts!
