MARS received a notification that a dead endangered blue whale had been found floating off Sambro

General Intrests

**** Info via MARS

Late yesterday, MARS received a notification that a dead endangered blue whale had been found floating off Sambro, Nova Scotia. By early this morning, the 82ft long carcass had washed ashore on Crystal Crescent Beach.

MARS Responders were on-scene today to assess the situation and collect valuable research samples. While the location is not ideal for a full-scale necropsy, we are working closely with our partners to determine the best steps forward.

Please remember that while this is an amazing animal that people may want to visit, it is also a federally protected species under the Species At Risk Act and it is illegal to disturb the carcass or remove any body parts. Feel free to look at the animal but please do not touch and be sure to keep back a safe distance.

Many thanks to everyone who notified us of this incident and helped locate this carcass, particularly the Canadian Coast Guard and DFO.
