The Royal Canadian Navy hosts training event with key partners in the Atlantic​

CUTLASS FURY is a bi-annual, medium-scale, training exercise which will take place off the coast of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland from 7 to 17 September 2021.​ The exercise will enhance mutual awareness, inter-operability, and readiness of Canada’s Atlantic Fleet, allied navies, and other joint elements of the Canadian Armed Forces in tactical-level maritime warfare.

This year, CUTLASS FURY 21 will be focused on tactical training within the context of a fictitious geopolitical scenario.​ It will include an array of live air and surface weapons firings against a challenging array of remotely-operated targets. The scope of this training is to provide participants a demanding yet realistic exercise layered into a building political crisis that culminates into a crisis scenario.

Participants include the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), the United States Navy (USN), and the Marine Nationale (MN) of France.

  • ​ ​ ​ ​ ​RCN participants include the submarine Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS)Windsor, the frigates HMCSHalifaxMontréal, and Toronto; the Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDV) HMCS MonctonKingston, and Summerside; and Naval Replenishment Unit (NRU) Asterix.

  • ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​Allied participants include:​ from the United States Navy (USN) – United States Ship (USS)Forrest Shermanand USS Thomas Hudner, as well as two P-8 Orion maritime patrol aircraft; and from the Marine Nationale (MN) of France – French Ship (FS) Aquitaine.

  • ​ ​ ​ ​ ​The exercise will include a significant number of aircraft, from the RCAF, including: CP-140 Auroras, and CH-148 Cyclone maritime helicopters. There will also be a number of allied and contracted aircraft participating. Having aircraft taking part in CUTLASS FURY exercises air-to-maritime integration and coordination, anti-air defence, and anti-submarine warfare.

  • ​ ​ ​ ​ ​CUTLASS FURY will conclude in St. John’s, Newfoundland on September 17.
