UPDATE: Human remains found after fire on remote island

Yarmouth Rural RCMP has found human remains after a fire that occurred overnight on September 3 on a remote island near Little River Harbour.

At approximately 1:50 a.m. on September 3, police received a call for help from a remote island near Little River Harbour. Police responded and learned that two men had gone to a camp overnight and that the camp had caught fire. One man managed to escape the camp but the second man was unaccounted for. While police were responding to the island, it was learned that the fire had burned itself out.

The first man was rescued and a search for the second man was initiated. On September 4, human remains were located in the rubble of the fire.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and is being supported by RCMP Forensic Identification Services. The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Office is also supporting the investigation.

The name of the island was initially reported as “Broomstick Island”. The island is actually named “Upper Calf Island”.
