Common name: Junior girls’ necklaces with button and bird charm pendants and matching bracelet
Product description: This recall involves the Junior girls’ necklaces with button and bird charm pendants (style: 1236) and the bracelets to match the necklaces (style 1236-b).
Hazard identified: Health Canada’s sampling and evaluation program has determined that the recalled jewellery contains lead and cadmium in excess of allowable limits. Under the Children’s Jewellery Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age and contain more than 90 mg/kg total lead or more than 130 mg/kg total cadmium. Lead and cadmium are highly toxic, especially to children. A range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead and cadmium, including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injury, convulsions, coma, as well as effects related to the liver, kidneys, heart and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths.
