Police issue 79 tickets for speeding and other vehicle offences

Halifax Regional Police issued 79 tickets for speeding and other motor vehicle-related offences throughout the region yesterday.

The HRP Traffic Unit and community response officers were monitoring traffic on many of our roadways yesterday. Over a period of a couple of hours, the officers issued 79 summary offence tickets: 37 for speeding; 40 for other offences including no insurance, expired plates, using a cell phone, safety inspections and illegal transportation of cannabis; and two for stunting.

One stunting incident occurred at approximately 12 p.m. on Highfield Park Drive in Dartmouth. A community response officer captured the vehicle’s speed at 115 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. A 41-year-old Dartmouth man was ticketed for stunting under the Motor Vehicle Act, a charge that is automatically laid when a vehicle is travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit. In addition, the man was suspended from driving for seven days and the vehicle he was driving was seized and impounded.

The other incident, involving a driver travelling 115 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Main Street in Dartmouth, was released yesterday.

The fine in Nova Scotia for stunting is $2,422.50 and six points are assigned to the driver’s record.

In a continued effort to address traffic safety issues and educate citizens on the rules of the road, our officers focus on speed enforcement. We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe.
