Smoky, but safe
Yesterday, firefighters took action when the realized that a telephone pole that was on fire was topped with an osprey nest with two hatchlings in it!
Unfortunately, they couldn’t save the nest, but they did what firefighters do – they saved lives. Then they called us and we took the young into our care. Other than smelling faintly of smoke, they are otherwise healthy… and hungry!
These little ones may have a long life ahead of them. Ospreys can live for a long time – typically between 15 to 20 years. However, the oldest osprey on record was a banded bird that died (probably from a bullet) at the age of 35!
