RCMP is reminding the public to be cautious when looking for love online.

Romance scams continue to be a way for scammers to take advantage of their victims by taking their money. Recently, police received a report from a victim who lost more than $50,000 over an extended period of time to someone who said he was a doctor working in Syria and needed money because his bank accounts were blocked.

Scammers often create fake social media profiles or online dating sites to gain their victims’ trust before asking for money, usually for an emergency.

Police want to remind the public that being scammed is never the victim’s fault and scammers can be very persuasive and convincing. If you think you have been a victim, remember that you are not alone and contact police or the Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Here are some online dating safety tips to help you avoid becoming a victim.
