Police charge man with sexual assault

Update

Mark Patrick Gray, 27, of Halifax, is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court today to face one count each of robbery, possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose and failure to comply with conditions.

Police have charged a man in relation to a sexual assault that occurred last week in Dartmouth.

On June 2 police received a report of a sexual assault that had occurred at a residence in the Highfield Park area of Dartmouth on May 31. A man employed as a delivery driver sexually assaulted a woman who had placed an order for delivery from a pizza shop located at 68 Highfield Park Drive. We are not providing any further details to protect the identity of the victim.

Officers arrested the man without incident on June 4 at an address in Halifax. Investigators from the Sexual Assault Investigative Team have charged Janish Sureshkuma Patel, 24, of Halifax, with one count of sexual assault. Patel is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court at a later date. He has been placed on conditions that require him to refrain from delivering to dwellings.

Sexual assault investigations are complex. As part of our victim-centered, trauma-informed approach to sexualized violence, we work closely with victims to determine if they wish to proceed with an investigation and charges. Police must also ensure the victim’s privacy is upheld and their well-being is fully considered.
