Reminder: Local Defence Team personnel and members of the public are invited to attend two events this weekend commemorating the 78th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest campaign of the Second World War during which thousands of Canadians fought valiantly for control of the North Atlantic Ocean to supply the war effort.
(1) The Master Mariners of Canada Battle of the Atlantic Commemorative Ceremony
The Master Mariners of Canada will be once again holding a ceremony to remember the Battle of the Atlantic and the sacrifices made by the merchant mariners. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 6, 11:00 a.m. at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax.
(2) Battle of the Atlantic Sunday Ceremony
Every year on the first Sunday of May we gather to honour and remember the bravery and the sacrifices of the sailors, aviators and merchant mariners who fought in the Battle of the Atlantic – thousands of whom never returned home and whose bodies were never recovered from the sea.
Join us at Point Pleasant Park Sailors’ Memorial on Sunday, May 7 at 10:30am for the annual Battle of the Atlantic Sunday ceremony. This ceremony will include a roll call of ships and air squadrons lost during the battle, wreath layings, music from the Stadacona Band of the Royal Canadian Navy, a CH-148 Cyclone helicopter fly past, and a full parade with four platoons consisting of RCN, RCAF, CA and Cadet personnel. HMCS Sackville will be anchored dropping a wreath and conducting several burials at sea.
Seating will be reserved for dignitaries and veterans only. All others in attendance are kindly asked to stand while observing the ceremony.
