Hurricane Teddy update and municipal service impacts
Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following updates and impacts to municipal services as a result of Hurricane Teddy.
The following information is correct as of 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23.
Weather Update
Heavy rain and high winds are expected to continue today and dissipate by later this afternoon.
High waves may still be present in coastal areas, with localized flooding throughout the region. The public is urged to stay off the roads for their own safety and avoid impeding efforts by first responders in emergency situations.
Peggys Point Road, Lawrencetown Road, and Highway Number 207 from Seaforth and Chezzetcook will remain closed to non-residents.
Halifax Transit
Halifax Transit bus, Access-A-Bus and ferry service will resume at noon. Ferry service will begin immediately at that time, with bus and access-a-bus service resuming gradually and fully operational by 1 p.m. Detours may be in place for areas with localized flooding. The first ferry from Alderney to Halifax will depart at noon.
The first ferry from Woodside to Halifax will depart at 12:07 p.m.
Self-evacuation
All residents who voluntarily self-evacuated can return home. For any significant property damage, please contact your insurance provider.
Parks & Recreation
Municipally-operated recreation centres will be reopening today, however some facilities may experience delays in reopening due to power outages in certain areas. Please call ahead to your local recreation centre for updates. The Musquodoboit Recreation Centre & Library and the Sheet Harbour Recreation Centre & Library will remain closed today due to continuing impacts from Teddy.
Municipal sports fields, all-weather fields, tracks and baseball diamonds remain closed and all bookings have been cancelled. An announcement on reopening will be made once the impacts to these facilities have been assessed.
The Halifax Public Gardens will reopen at noon today.
Due to safety concerns, residents are advised to avoid visiting municipal parks until the storm has passed and potential damage, including downed trees, has been addressed.
Customer Service Centres
The customer service centres at the Bayers Road Centre and Alderney Gate will reopen as of 1 p.m. The customer service centre at the Musquodoboit Harbour Recreation Centre & Library will remain closed.
Solid Waste
A reminder that curbside collection of garbage, organics, and recyclables is cancelled for Wednesday, Sept. 23 and is rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26.
Curbside collection for Thursday, Sept. 24 will continue as scheduled.
The household special waste depot for Saturday, Sept. 26 is cancelled, and is expected to resume on the following Saturday, Oct. 3. For further schedule details visit our website at: www.halifax.ca/HSWDepot.
Residents and commercial solid waste haulers are also advised that the following facilities will be closed on Wednesday, September 23:
- The public drop off at the Otter Lake Waste Facility at 600 Otter Lake Drive (the transfer station will remain open for commercial haulers)
- The Materials Recycling Facility at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive
- The Composting Facilities at 80 Gloria McCluskey Avenue in Burnside and 61 Evergreen Place in Goodwood
- The rural refuse depot located at 21611 Highway 7 in Sheet Harbour
