Halifax EMO Mock Communication Disaster and ARRL Field Day Exercise
Scenario:
A city-wide wireless communication failure has occurred in Halifax, necessitating the use of amateur radio to maintain contact with other sites across North America. This exercise will be held during Field Day 2024 on June 22-23. It aims to test the resilience and effectiveness of amateur radio communications during a city-wide wireless communication failure with its disaster partners.
Event Overview:
Join us for an exciting and collaborative event as we participate in a mock communication disaster exercise hosted by Halifax EMO at Fort Needham. This event will feature a 24-hour ARRL Field Day exercise, bringing together various emergency response and amateur radio organizations to test and showcase our communication capabilities.

- St. John Ambulance (providing medical support and safety)
- Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (providing food support)

- Joint Emergency Management (JEM) teams from HRM – EMO
Event Activities:
- Public Ham Radio Station: Learn about amateur radio and try making contact using ham radios. Discover how wireless communications work during disasters.
- HRM – EMO Antenna Trailer Testing: We’ll test the bands for 24 hours, attempting to connect with countries around the world.
- ARRL Field Day Exercise: Participate in setting up, operating, and taking downfield communication equipment.
- Wireless Communication Sessions – public engagement activities and demonstrations from groups.
