Colchester County District RCMP investigating laser pointed at aircraft incident
Colchester County District RCMP is investigating after a green laser was pointed towards an aircraft flying over the Five Islands area.
This morning, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a small two seater plane was flying at 6,500 feet and travelling near the Five Islands Provincial Park when the pilot observed a green laser appear near the flight deck. The pilot reported the incident to air traffic controllers.
Investigators have since learned that the light source appeared to be tracking the aircraft for a duration of 30 to 40 seconds.
The RCMP is reminding the public that pointing a laser at an aircraft is a criminal offence. Under the Aeronautics Act, any person convicted of intentionally interfering with an aircraft, by using a laser, could face up to $ 100,000 in fines and/or up to five years in prison.
