| Due to the extreme devastation in Cape Breton from Hurricane Fiona, the Nova Scotia SPCA is starting to relocate animals from their shelter on East Broadway. Five dogs and 27 cats will be transported from Cape Breton to SPCA shelters across the province who have kennel space.
The roof protecting the outdoor dog enclosures was blown off, signage and doors have fallen, and the roof over the SPCA Veterinary Hospital in Cape Breton was damaged. The Nova Scotia SPCA had more than 300 animals in six shelters across the province when the hurricane struck. Some SPCA staff stayed on-site Friday night, and others who lived close by were on-call. No animals or staff were injured in the storm.
“The shelter has been without power for a while,” says Sandra Flemming, Director of Animal Care at the Nova Scotia SPCA. “We know that Nova Scotia Power and crews from other provinces are working hard to get power back for everyone, but it is becoming unsafe for our animals. We have animals that need medical care and others that need to be adopted. The best thing we can do is move them.”
The Nova Scotia SPCA received a $25,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada™ as part of their Emergency Response Program to help with immediate needs to support pets and the community. Shelters in Cape Breton, Pictou County, and Dartmouth all need various repairs or help, with Cape Breton in the most need.
