Questions have been asked about the toxicity and longevity of the Quinpool Road fire. The Halifax Professional Firefighters have answered!
Via the Halifax Professional Firefighters
Why was the smoke so toxic—and why is it still burning?
The smoke was especially toxic because of the materials inside the structure—things like plastics, insulation, treated wood, and synthetic furnishings. When those burn, they release hazardous gases like carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and phosgene. That’s why our members wear full protective gear and breathing apparatus, and why we urge the public to keep a safe distance during active fires.
As for why it’s still burning: fires like this can extend deep into voids and hidden spaces. The building was heavily compromised and had to be demolished during the response, which exposed new hot spots and made full extinguishment more complex. Crews have remained on scene, working to safely put out every last ember.
We appreciate the questions—and the support.
