The female northern cardinal patient that we posted about on Monday has gone home, and her mate was there waiting for her!
There are a lot of reasons why we return animals back to their exact ecosystem, and that list includes the fact that they they may have mates in the area. Cardinals are generally monogamous and often mate for life, so when our patient’s window strike injuries didn’t require her to have an extended stay with us, we got her back home as soon as possible because the caller knew she had a mate. There are lots of species of animals that mate for life, so we always factor that in!
It didn’t take long for them to find each other.
