A holiday message from Fire Chief Ken Stuebing on behalf of Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE)
As the holiday season surrounds us with its warmth and joy, I want to take a moment on behalf of Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency to share our heartfelt wishes with the community we are so honoured to serve.
This time of year is about connection—coming together with loved ones, celebrating traditions and reflecting on the things that matter most. It’s also a time when the spirit of giving and kindness shines brightest. Here in HRM, we see that spirit every day in the care and resilience of our neighbours, and it inspires us to give our very best in service to you.
2024 was HRFE’s 270th year of service and over the centuries our team has experienced many challenges and triumphs, and through it all, we’ve been reminded of the incredible strength of this community. Whether responding to emergencies, participating in safety initiatives, or supporting local events, it has been our privilege to stand alongside you.
As we move through this festive season, we encourage everyone to celebrate safely:
• Check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
• Practice safe cooking habits and never leave the stove unattended.
• Keep flammable materials away from holiday decorations.
• Discard smoking materials safely.
• Don’t overload electrical circuits and never use extension cords as permanent wiring.
• Plan ahead for winter weather and emergencies.
While many of us will celebrate this season with family and friends, our members remain ready to respond whenever and wherever we are needed. It is our honour to serve and protect this community, not just during the holidays, but every day of the year.
For those who may find this season difficult or are working through the holidays to keep others safe and cared for, please know that you are in our thoughts. Together, we form a community that supports one another, and it is that sense of togetherness that makes Nova Scotians truly special.
