Chances of a white Christmas via Environment Canada

As the holiday season approaches, many people eagerly anticipate waking up to a snow-covered landscape on Christmas morning. But, will December 25 greet us with a blanket of white? Will festive, snowy scenes fill the view from our windows?

While some regions in Canada are already dusted in snow, others are still holding onto the earthy colours of fall. This brings up the big question: what are the chances of a snowy Christmas morning? To answer this, we’ve analyzed snowfall records from 1955 to 2023 to estimate the likelihood of a white Christmas in major Canadian cities.

What makes a white Christmas?

Did you know there are specific requirements for what counts as a white or perfect Christmas?

White Christmas: There must be at least 2 cm of snow on the ground on Christmas morning by 7 a.m. local time.

Perfect Christmas: There must be at least 2 cm of snow on the ground on Christmas morning by 7 a.m. local time, as well as a measurable snowfall sometime on Christmas Day.

As December 25 approaches, keep an eye on your weather app! Starting on Thursday, you’ll be able to see the forecast for Christmas Day for your city in the seven-day forecast!
