Municipal service level adjustments for the Thanksgiving long weekend

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following municipal program and service level adjustments for the upcoming Thanksgiving long weekend, including the holiday on Monday, Oct. 14.

Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours

There will be no garbage, organics or recyclables collection services on Monday, Oct. 14.

Curbside collection normally scheduled for Monday, Oct. 14, will instead occur on Saturday, Oct. 12. To ensure collection, residents are asked to place materials curbside, contained and secured to prevent access from wildlife, prior to 7 a.m. on collection day.

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility will be closed on Monday, Oct. 14, but will be open on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Materials Recovery Facility will be closed on Monday, Oct. 14, but will be open on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Household Special Waste Depot will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 12 but will be open on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A Mobile Household Special Waste Depot will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Mic Mac Mall (21 Micmac Boulevard, Dartmouth).

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services

Halifax Transit buses will be operating on Holiday Schedules on Monday, Oct. 14. Alderney Ferry service will also be operating on Holiday Schedules, with the first trip departing Alderney Ferry Terminal at 7:30 a.m. Woodside Ferry service will not be operating on Monday, Oct. 14.

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services

Many municipally operated recreation facilities will be closed on Monday, Oct. 14, except for the Emera Oval, which will be open (weather dependent) and the Sackville Sports Stadium. Residents are advised to contact their respective facility for operating hours and program information.

The last day of the summer/fall season for the Emera Oval is Monday, Oct. 14. Residents are able to enjoy the concrete surface for rollerskating, biking, skateboarding, in-line skating and more. Free equipment rentals, including bikes, scooters and skateboards, remain available. The municipality looks forward to welcoming residents back to the Oval this winter, when the surface will be open for ice skating.

Customer Contact Centres

The 311 Contact Centre will be closed Monday, Oct. 14 for full service. Urgent calls can still be reported. Regular operating hours will resume on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Alderney Gate, Bayers Road and Musquodoboit Harbour Customer Service centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Monday, Oct. 14 and will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Parking

On-street paid parking will be free on Monday, Oct. 14. Motorists are reminded to abide by other posted signage, including no stopping, accessible parking spaces and no parking zones.
