Municipal program and service level adjustments – Labour Day weekend

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following municipal program and service level adjustments for the Labour Day weekend:

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services:

Public washrooms and first aid at the Emera Oval pavilion will be open on Monday, September 7 from noon to 8 p.m. Rentals are not currently available, however, residents are welcome to use the Emera Oval for cycling and rollerblading with their own equipment. Please be advised that masks are mandatory in public places, including the public washrooms at the Emera Oval.

Lifeguard supervision and water quality testing at all municipal beaches ended for the summer season on Monday, August 31, however, the following beaches will reopen Saturday, September 5 to Monday, September 7:

  • Chocolate Lake beach
  • Kearney Lake beach
  • Penhorn Lake beach

Lifeguard supervision will be in place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The last day for water quality testing at these beaches is Monday, September 7. Residents are reminded to always use caution when in, or on, the water.

The algae bloom risk advisory remains in effect for Lake Micmac in Dartmouth. The municipality will advise residents when the risk advisory has been lifted.

Most municipal splash pads will remain open until Sunday, September 20. The Halifax Common splash pad closed for the season on Monday, August 31.

Many municipally-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Monday, September 7. Residents are advised to call ahead to their respective facility for operating hours and program information. Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours:

No municipal solid waste collection services will take place on Monday, September 7. Curbside collection of garbage, organics or recyclables normally scheduled for Monday, September 7 will be provided the preceding Saturday, September 5. Residents are reminded that collection services can begin as early as 7 a.m. To ensure collection, materials may be placed curbside the evening prior to collection day.

The Otter Lake Waste Facility will be closed on Monday, September 7, but will be open on Saturday, September 5 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, September 6 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (residential drop-off area only). The municipal Recycling Plant will be closed on Labour Day, Monday, September 7, but will be open on Saturday, September 5 from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Household Special Waste depot will reopen on Saturday, September 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Service:

On Monday, September 7, Halifax Transit buses will be operating on holiday schedules, and ferries will be operating on the current reduced schedules for Sundays and holidays (10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.).

Parking:

On-street parking meter spaces are free on Monday, September 7, however motorists must abide by other posted signage such as accessible parking, fire hydrants and no-stopping.

Customer Contact Centres:

The 311 Contact Centre will be operating on regular hours, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Monday, September 7. You can contact 311 by phone, or by emailing contacthrm@halifax.ca.

The three Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Monday, September 7, and will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, September 8.
