Gus the tortoise hatchday celebration

Friday, August 9 to Sunday, August 11

Join us to celebrate the one and only Gus the Gopher Tortoise!

Each August, we celebrate the hatchday of Gus. This year, we are celebrating 102 years of our favourite tortoise.

On Friday, August 9th, visit between 2:00-4:00pm to sing and walk with Gus, enjoy a cupcake, and create a special craft to take home. And be sure to sign the big hatchday card for Gus!

Schedule of events:

2:00-4:00pm – Drop in to create your own turtle crafts in our Project Room.

2:00pm – official singing of “Happy Hatchday” to Gus, staff and Gus walk (outside weather permitting), and visitors enjoy cupcakes and lemonade.

On Saturday, August 10th, visit between 2:00-4:00pm to sing and walk with Gus, enjoy a cupcake, and create a special craft to take home. And be sure to sign the big hatchday card for Gus!

Schedule of events:
11:30am – 4:00pm – visit with friends from the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute to learn about Nova Scotia wildlife, like turtles!

2:00-4:00pm – Drop in to create your own turtle crafts in our Project Room.

2:00pm – official singing of “Happy Hatchday” to Gus, staff and Gus walk (outside weather permitting), and visitors enjoy cupcakes and lemonade.

PLUS! Visit with friends from the Canadian Sea Turtle Network to learn about marine turtles in our coastal waters

On Sunday, August 11th, visit between 2:00-4:00pm to sing and walk with Gus, enjoy a cupcake, and create a special craft to take home. And be sure to sign the big hatchday card for Gus!

Schedule of events:

2:00-4:00pm – Drop in to create your own turtle crafts in our Project Room.

2:00pm – a special reading of the new book, Nova Scotia Loves Gus by author Doretta Groenendyk, followed by the official singing of “Happy Hatchday” to Gus, staff and Gus walk (outside weather permitting), and visitors enjoy cupcakes and lemonade.

PLUS! Visit with friends from the Canadian Sea Turtle Network to learn about marine turtles in our coastal waters.

This event is included with Museum admission.
