Update on search for Richard Mahoney

Victoria County District RCMP is continuing to ask for the public’s assistance in locating 80-year-old Richard Mahoney of Baddeck.

Mahoney was last seen in the early hours of July 18 on Jessica Wong Ln. in Baddeck. He is believed to have been be on foot.

A number of tips have been received since the investigation and search began, but there have been no confirmed sightings of Mahoney since he was reported missing.

Through the investigation, officers have learned that Mahoney may be in or headed to the Sydney area. We are asking the public in the Sydney area as well as all areas between Baddeck and Sydney to be especially vigilant. Police and search and rescue organizations who are participating in this search are asking that residents in this area consider checking outbuildings on their properties such as sheds, garages, or barns and call 911 if Mahoney is observed on their property.

Mahoney is described as 5-foot-8, 140 lbs. He has grey hair and blue eyes, and a dark bruise on his right elbow. He may be wearing dark coloured shorts, a white and blue plaid or checkered shirt, and moccasin style shoes.

The search for Mahoney, which is continuing throughout today, has so far involved general duty resources from Victoria County District RCMP, nine ground search and rescue teams, RCMP Police Dog Services, RCMP Air Services, Civil Air Search and Rescue Association, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Anyone with information about Richard Mahoney’s whereabouts, or anyone who has seen or interacted with someone they believe to be him, is asked to call 911 or contact Victoria County District RCMP at 902-295-2350.
