Municipality observes Emancipation Day

The Halifax Regional Municipality is encouraging residents to observe Emancipation Day on Thursday, Aug. 1.

Recognizing Emancipation Day provides an opportunity to maintain ongoing meaningful dialogue around race relations and an inclusive society, and to celebrate the diverse heritage, culture and contributions of people of African descent across the region.

In recognition and celebration of Emancipation Day, the following events are open to residents:

The municipality is committed to addressing the anti-Black racism that still exists within our organization and the communities we serve. To support these efforts, Regional Council endorsed the framework for developing a municipal Anti-Black Racism Strategy and Action Plan.
